India to Stop 160-year-old Telegram Service!

India's state-owned telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced that it is discontinuing its 160-year-old telegram service.

The service, which is the last large-scale telegram service operating in the world, will cease on 15 July, 2013.

"We were incurring losses of over $23 million a year because SMS and smartphones have rendered it redundant."-Shamim Akhtar, general manager of BSNL's telegraph services

The telegram has also played a large cultural role in India, where they were first introduced by British doctor William O'Shaughnessy in 1850.
