Lil Rick, one of the most popular and entertaining artistes in Barbados will not be competing in any of this year’s Crop Over Festival events. Ricky "Lil Rick" Reid announced to hundreds of partygoers over the weekend that he would be sitting out this year’s contests. That’s because he feels he gets a raw deal every year. Progress on the Dogs Control Bill of 2013 has come to a standstill yet again as the Government and Opposition begin working together on the legislation. Opposition Senator Colm Imbert yesterday convinced the government to postpone debate on the bill until Friday. In the meantime, the Opposition wants to work to help improve the legislation’s loopholes. The bill will hit owners of dangerous dogs with fines of $200,000 and 10-year jail terms if their animal mauls someone to death.

A 23-year-old former bank employee is facing 83 fraud charges. Ravi Samaroo of Montrose, Chaguanas is accused of defrauding Royal Bank of Canada of almost $2.4-Million between March 15th and June 12th. It took about 90-minutes for Magistrate Gloria Jasmath to read all of the charges yesterday.

The Prime Minister’s lawyer says police are taking “Trinidadian time” to investigate the alleged Section 34 emails. Israel Khan SC says Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has received no response since submitting a signed statement a whole week ago. Khan also warns that Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley could face a criminal charge of misbehaviour in public office if the emails are determined to be false.

Formerly missing hiker Bissoondaye Geeta Seenath will need at least a month to recover from her week-long ordeal in the Matura forest. She remains on bed rest at the Sangre Grande District Hospital, suffering from malnutrition as well as swollen feet, ankles and knees. She is being fed a combination of juices, water and intravenous fluids. Seenath was found by a Matura resident this past Saturday after vanishing into the forest during a hike on June 8th.

Government will work to make the home of Sea Lots accident victim Ryan Rampersad more accessible. The National Social Development Programme of the Ministry of the People will take the lead and the construction work will be done by the Unemployment Relief Programme. Rampersad remains hospitalised and severely paralysed following the February 24th car accident which claimed the lives of three others.

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a woman whose charred remains were found in the ashes of her La Brea home. Flames erupted at the Sobo Village house belonging to 36-year-old Marilyn George at about 4:45 yesterday morning. Her body was later found in her bedroom. Her family says someone attempted to burn her house down last Carnival Tuesday.

A Trinidad and Tobago citizen is among a group of about 25 CARICOM nationals who came ashore illegally at Golden Beach in Miami. When the group landed, they ran in all directions but authorities detained three men, three women and two children. One of the persons detained is a Trinidadian. T&T's Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Neil Parsan says he has not made contact with the T&T citizen and will be unable to do so until sometime today, after the man has been processed by US Immigration.

There has been an oil spill just off Icacos at one of Petrotrin’s Offshore Rigs. Petrotrin says that clean up efforts were started almost immediately and stressed that the spill was not major. The company claims there is no oil on the shoreline, even though fishermen claim that as much as 100 barrels spilled into the sea and that the oil is running the fish.

Minister of Housing, Dr. Roodal Moonilal said a comprehensive review of the CEPEP programme is being undertaken after it was discovered that contracts are not being distributed evenly throughout the country. MP for La Brea, Fitzgerald Jeffrey questioned how exactly CEPEP intends to even out the distribution process. But Moonilal could only say that the plans being put into place would be revealed in due time.

Meantime, Jack Warner who hopes to get the nod to contest the seat for his party, says the United National Congress is divided. He made the point when he addressed a cottage meeting less than a n hour before the main event in which the Prime Minister was the feature speaker. Warner, however, attended the UNC meeting.

The Prime Minister has announced July 8th as nomination day for the Chaguanas West bye-election. She told party supporters at last night’s Monday Night Forum, that the People’s Partnership has agreed to field only a UNC candidate for the election. Mrs Bissessar advised those wishing to contest the bye-election to file their nominations at the Rienzi Complex on or before this Friday. Screenings of candidates will take place next week.
