In fact it's often said that it's actually harder for the families left behind than it is for the troops on the front line. We decided to follow one Royal Marine's family to see how they coped with the six months apart. Rebecca Conway had two young children when her husband, Colour Sergeant Dominic Conway, went to Afghanistan. But a third child, a little girl, was born while he was away. This is their story...

Alongside today's parade and medals ceremony, 40 Commando have been remembering Corporal David O'Connor - who was killed during their final tour of Afghanistan.
