It has a really quirky yet laidback feel to it that once you step in, you don’t really feel like leaving. It has 2 levels with the upper level kind of like a loft overlooking the ground floor plus an alfresco area. Just opened in mid March, it serves up artisanal coffee, delicious comfort food & original cocktails. So food wise, what must you try? FAT SOLDIERS ($9 nett) – You get a plate of baguettes with a bowl of homemade bacon jam. What is that? After much wrangling, we managed to find out it’s made with bacon, spices, chillis, a bit of maple syrup and some other special ingredients. It tastes kinda like a Ba Kwa jam but has the texture of a Hay Bee Hiam but without the spiciness. All you need to know is that it’s soooo good. FRENCH ONION SOUP ($8 nett) – A pretty decent take on this traditional soup. It’s not overly salty and has lots of soft mushy onions in the soup. Topped with a comforting baguette crust of 3 cheese - Swiss Cheese, Parmesan, and Gruyère that’s all melted & gooey & slightly charred. SHIO-KOJI OCTOPOKE ($12 nett) – A rather unique dish and their rendition the poke, a Hawaiian raw fish salad, now given a Japanese twist. Tender cubes of pan-seared octopus cooked just right are tossed in shio-koji (a fermented rice-based salt substitute), wasabi and extra virgin olive oil, and paired with creamy avocado and shredded ginger flower for extra zing. YUMS! UMAMI PRAWN CAPELLINI ($22 nett) – This was my favourite. It’s a pretty wet pasta that looks & tastes like our Hokkien Mee. There’s capellini which is a thinner version of spaghetti cooked slightly UNDER al dente then steamed with homemade crustacean oil to infuse it with the extra taste & aroma. Stock made from prawn heads & butter (for added creaminess) is then added. It’s served with delicious grilled prawns that are tender, juicy & slightly charred with the lovely smokey flavour and topped with their secret umami ‘magic dust’ which try as we might, the owner refused to tell us what goes into it. But it really does make the dish taste quite magical. A dish that guarantees a party in your mouth. MISO PRESA IBERICO ($34 nett) – Prized Iberico pork is marinated well with miso and mirin, and oven baked to medium doneness. Outside you get this beautifully caramelised crust but inside it’s so soft tender with the right amount of fat for that juiciness. Served with some really awesome garlic mash that is smooth, butter & garlicky plus some veggies. PAN SEARED WATERMELON STEAKS ($9 nett) - Fresh watermelon slices are quickly pan-seared, then drizzled with balsamico glaze, and served with a pinch of sea salt, basil leaves and homemade pineapple sorbet. It’s cold, warm, sweet, tart, salty & refreshing all at the same time. A must try! Jewel Café + Bar also has a breakfast menu (9am to 11am on weekdays, 9am to 3pm on weekends and public holidays) with popular favourites like English Breakfast, Eggs Royale, Eggs Florentine, Croque Monsieur, and Brioche French Toast. No trip to Jewel Café + Bar is consummate without a cup of its artisanal coffee. All its espresso-based coffee specialties – served in its signature double shot style – are lovingly pulled using the Italian state-of-the-art La Marzocco Strada machine and freshly-ground single origin coffee beans from different countries such as Brazil, Ethiopia and Sumatra. The single origin beans are rotated two or three times a week so that diners can try a different taste each visit. Coffee connoisseurs, if you prefer brewed coffees, try the Hario V60 Pourover ($6), Chemex ($6), or Syphon ($16). They’ve also imported three sets of the esteemed Kyoto dripper – a towering, elegant glass contraption which calibrates the slow dripping of cold water through saturated coffee grounds over a duration of more than 20 hours. Coffee geeks can revel in the smooth, subtle nuances of this liquid gold by ordering the Portland ($7) black cold drip coffee, or the San Francisco ($7) which is mixed with Half-and-Half cream.

The main purpose of the game was to gain a high score by matching three or more balls of the same color in line, just like the bejeweled in your phone. After matching the balls, these would explode and new ones appear in their place. Unlike modern versions of Bejeweled such as “Candy Crush Saga” this game is over when no more combinations are possible in the game field. More than a cool party trick, it's actually a French tradition! Sabrage is a technique for opening a Champagne bottle with a sabre, used for ceremonial occasions. The sabre is slid along the body of the bottle to break the entire neck away from the bottle, leaving only the base of the bottle open and ready to pour. Note that one does not use the 'sharp' side of the blade, but instead, turns it around. The force of the backside of the blade hitting the lip breaks the glass to separate the collar from the neck of the bottle. The cork and collar remain together after separating from the neck. This technique became popular in France when the army of Napoleon visited many of the aristocratic domains. It was just after the French Revolution and the sabre was the weapon of choice of Napoleon's light cavalry (the Hussars). Napoleon's spectacular victories across all Europe gave them plenty of reason to celebrate. During these parties the cavalry would open the Champagne with their sabres. Napoleon, known to have said, "Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it." may have encouraged this.

It has a really quirky yet laidback feel to it that once you step in, you don’t really feel like leaving. It has 2 levels with the upper level kind of like a loft overlooking the ground floor plus an alfresco area. Just opened in mid March, it serves up artisanal coffee, delicious comfort food & original cocktails. So food wise, what must you try? FAT SOLDIERS ($9 nett) – You get a plate of baguettes with a bowl of homemade bacon jam. What is that? After much wrangling, we managed to find out it’s made with bacon, spices, chillis, a bit of maple syrup and some other special ingredients. It tastes kinda like a Ba Kwa jam but has the texture of a Hay Bee Hiam but without the spiciness. All you need to know is that it’s soooo good. FRENCH ONION SOUP ($8 nett) – A pretty decent take on this traditional soup. It’s not overly salty and has lots of soft mushy onions in the soup. Topped with a comforting baguette crust of 3 cheese - Swiss Cheese, Parmesan, and Gruyère that’s all melted & gooey & slightly charred. SHIO-KOJI OCTOPOKE ($12 nett) – A rather unique dish and their rendition the poke, a Hawaiian raw fish salad, now given a Japanese twist. Tender cubes of pan-seared octopus cooked just right are tossed in shio-koji (a fermented rice-based salt substitute), wasabi and extra virgin olive oil, and paired with creamy avocado and shredded ginger flower for extra zing. YUMS! UMAMI PRAWN CAPELLINI ($22 nett) – This was my favourite. It’s a pretty wet pasta that looks & tastes like our Hokkien Mee. There’s capellini which is a thinner version of spaghetti cooked slightly UNDER al dente then steamed with homemade crustacean oil to infuse it with the extra taste & aroma. Stock made from prawn heads & butter (for added creaminess) is then added. It’s served with delicious grilled prawns that are tender, juicy & slightly charred with the lovely smokey flavour and topped with their secret umami ‘magic dust’ which try as we might, the owner refused to tell us what goes into it. But it really does make the dish taste quite magical. A dish that guarantees a party in your mouth. MISO PRESA IBERICO ($34 nett) – Prized Iberico pork is marinated well with miso and mirin, and oven baked to medium doneness. Outside you get this beautifully caramelised crust but inside it’s so soft tender with the right amount of fat for that juiciness. Served with some really awesome garlic mash that is smooth, butter & garlicky plus some veggies. PAN SEARED WATERMELON STEAKS ($9 nett) - Fresh watermelon slices are quickly pan-seared, then drizzled with balsamico glaze, and served with a pinch of sea salt, basil leaves and homemade pineapple sorbet. It’s cold, warm, sweet, tart, salty & refreshing all at the same time. A must try! Jewel Café + Bar also has a breakfast menu (9am to 11am on weekdays, 9am to 3pm on weekends and public holidays) with popular favourites like English Breakfast, Eggs Royale, Eggs Florentine, Croque Monsieur, and Brioche French Toast. No trip to Jewel Café + Bar is consummate without a cup of its artisanal coffee. All its espresso-based coffee specialties – served in its signature double shot style – are lovingly pulled using the Italian state-of-the-art La Marzocco Strada machine and freshly-ground single origin coffee beans from different countries such as Brazil, Ethiopia and Sumatra. The single origin beans are rotated two or three times a week so that diners can try a different taste each visit. Coffee connoisseurs, if you prefer brewed coffees, try the Hario V60 Pourover ($6), Chemex ($6), or Syphon ($16). They’ve also imported three sets of the esteemed Kyoto dripper – a towering, elegant glass contraption which calibrates the slow dripping of cold water through saturated coffee grounds over a duration of more than 20 hours. It tastes kinda like a Ba Kwa jam but has the texture of a Hay Bee Hiam but without the spiciness. All you need to know is that it’s soooo good. FRENCH ONION SOUP ($8 nett) – A pretty decent take on this traditional soup. It’s not overly salty and has lots of soft mushy onions in the soup. Topped with a comforting baguette crust of 3 cheese - Swiss Cheese, Parmesan, and Gruyère that’s all melted & gooey & slightly charred. SHIO-KOJI OCTOPOKE ($12 nett) – A rather unique dish and their rendition the poke, a Hawaiian raw fish salad, now given a Japanese twist. Tender cubes of pan-seared octopus cooked just right are tossed in shio-koji (a fermented rice-based salt substitute), wasabi and extra virgin olive oil, and paired with creamy avocado and shredded ginger flower for extra zing. YUMS! UMAMI PRAWN CAPELLINI ($22 nett) – This was my favourite. It’s a pretty wet pasta that looks & tastes like our Hokkien Mee. There’s capellini which is a thinner version of spaghetti cooked slightly UNDER al dente then steamed with homemade crustacean oil to infuse it with the extra taste & aroma. Stock made from prawn heads & butter (for added creaminess) is then added. It’s served with delicious grilled prawns that are tender, juicy & slightly charred with the lovely smokey flavour and topped with their secret umami ‘magic dust’ which try as we might, the owner refused to tell us what goes into it. But it really does make the dish taste quite magical. A dish that guarantees a party in your mouth. MISO PRESA IBERICO ($34 nett) – Prized Iberico pork is marinated well with miso and mirin, and oven baked to medium doneness. Outside you get this beautifully caramelised crust but inside it’s so soft tender with the right amount of fat for that juiciness. Served with some really awesome garlic mash that is smooth, butter & garlicky plus some veggies. PAN SEARED WATERMELON STEAKS ($9 nett) - Fresh watermelon slices are quickly pan-seared, then drizzled with balsamico glaze, and served with a pinch of sea salt, basil leaves and homemade pineapple sorbet. It’s cold, warm, sweet, tart, salty & refreshing all at the same time. A must try! Jewel Café + Bar also has a breakfast menu (9am to 11am on weekdays, 9am to 3pm on weekends and public holidays) with popular favourites like English Breakfast, Eggs Royale, Eggs Florentine, Croque Monsieur, and Brioche French Toast. No trip to Jewel Café + Bar is consummate without a cup of its artisanal coffee. All its espresso-based coffee specialties – served in its signature double shot style – are lovingly pulled using the Italian state-of-the-art La Marzocco Strada machine and freshly-ground single origin coffee beans from different countries such as Brazil, Ethiopia and Sumatra. The single origin beans are rotated two or three times a week so that diners can try a different taste each visit. Coffee connoisseurs, if you prefer brewed coffees, try the Hario V60 Pourover ($6), Chemex ($6), or Syphon ($16). They’ve also imported three sets of the esteemed Kyoto dripper – a towering, elegant glass contraption which calibrates the slow dripping of cold water through saturated coffee grounds over a duration of more than 20 hours. Coffee geeks can revel in the smooth, subtle nuances of this liquid gold by ordering the Portland ($7) black cold drip coffee, or the San Francisco ($7) which is mixed with Half-and-Half cream.

More than a cool party trick, it's actually a French tradition! Sabrage is a technique for opening a Champagne bottle with a sabre, used for ceremonial occasions. The sabre is slid along the body of the bottle to break the entire neck away from the bottle, leaving only the base of the bottle open and ready to pour. Note that one does not use the 'sharp' side of the blade, but instead, turns it around. The force of the backside of the blade hitting the lip breaks the glass to separate the collar from the neck of the bottle. The cork and collar remain together after separating from the neck. This technique became popular in France when the army of Napoleon visited many of the aristocratic domains. It was just after the French Revolution and the sabre was the weapon of choice of Napoleon's light cavalry (the Hussars). Napoleon's spectacular victories across all Europe gave them plenty of reason to celebrate. During these parties the cavalry would open the Champagne with their sabres. Napoleon, known to have said, "Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it." may have encouraged this.
