Spotlight: John Lennon (1980) "Dr. Winston O'Boogie" risked his life sailing to Bermuda in the summer before writing new songs. Yoko Ono collaborated on John's seventh studio album, "Double Fantasy," which was a dialogue of alternating songs between the two. Lead guitarists Earl Slick and Hugh McCracken were guided by producer Jack Douglas. Although the sessions were self-financed, LennOno signed with Geffen Records after a bidding war. Initial reviews tended to be harsh, but days after Lennon's death, the first two singles and the album charted #1 in the US.

Spotlight: Paul McCartney | Two years ago, Beatle Paul released a video to accompany a song he wrote 20 years earlier: "Blue Sway." It's on the bonus audio disc of the special edition of McCartney II. The music video was created by award-winning surf filmmaker Jack McCoy and McCartney. To call it "unique underwater footage" is an understatement! Using a high-powered underwater jet ski, McCoy travels behind a wave, creating images that have never been seen before. The production is featured on the bonus DVD included in the set, released by MPL and Concord Music Group. The song is also now on the "Frances Ha" movie soundtrack from director Noah Baumbach. Spotlight: George Harrison (1969) The "Quiet Beatle" always wanted more of his songs on Beatle albums. Harrison's "Something" on the Abbey Road LP was praised by Lennon and McCartney as one of the best songs the group had to offer. It was the first Beatles song written by George to appear as a single "A" side and the only chart topper he wrote while still a member of the band. Of the more than 150 cover versions, Harrison's favorite was by James Brown, which was kept in his personal jukebox. Spotlight: John Lennon (2013) John Winston Lennon's hand-written song lyrics are now on display at the British Library. Hunter Davies, the Beatles biographer, recently donated a handful of rare Beatles song manuscripts and Lennon letters to the institution as part of a "cultural gifts plan." John's work will be exhibited next to historical artifacts from Beethoven, Shakespeare and the Magna Carta. Lyrics include "Strawberry Fields Forever," "She Said She Said" and "In My Life." Spotlight: Paul McCartney (2013) Beatle Paul's "Out There" tour quickly adjusted to living on Tulsa time at the futuristic BOK Center. Last night, Macca and Wings boomed out two and-a-half hours of hits to help celebrate the arena's fifth birthday. For many families in the audience, it was the soundtrack to their lives. Details:

The Beatles song "Help" was a "hitbound" first listed on "BossRadio's" Boss 30 for July 28, 1965. The single peaked on the survey at #3 while KHJ rewrote radio. Beatles Hit Story (1963) 50 years ago this month, the Beatles were set to tour with one of their greatest idols, Roy Orbison. The Fab Four's popularity was growing and they toured England sharing top billing. Roy put on a great show which the lads did not like to follow. Ringo said: "(Roy would) slay them and they'd scream for more." On the bus, Orbison would write "Pretty Woman" and Paul sketched out "All My Loving." The competition was friendly and 25 years later Harrison and Orbison would join the Traveling Wilburys. Details:

Spotlight: Paul McCartney (2013) Back in the USSR! Music as protest in Russia is alive and generating heat and support from Beatle Paul! McCartney has written a second letter to Russian officials, calling for justice in the case of imprisoned artist-activists Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova. Ms Alyokhina declared a hunger strike after being denied the right to attend her own parole hearing. Both Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova are members of the band, "Pussy Riot," in jail (10 months) for singing anti-Putin songs in a church! McCartney's message is that the whole world is watching this human rights violation unfold and he has many friends in Russia. The letters are hand-written and signed by Beatle Paul. Details:

What was the lad's home life like? Spotlight: George Harrison (1970) The "B" side to "The Long And Winding Road" was George's "For You Blue." This double-sided hit climbed to #1 on the US Billboard chart. Experts say it's one of the few Beatles songs where every section follows a classic 12-bar blues pattern, as Harrison sings this is "the twelve bar blues." Lennon is playing bottleneck slide using a shotgun shell as the bottleneck. (The lady in the song may be Patti Boyd.) Phil Spector added an introduction: a Lennon quip from studio tapes: "Queen says no to pot-smoking FBI members." Single was released May 8, 1970.
