Karrin Allyson enthralls at Tuckerman!http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-ash4/372786_275578789775_955540562_q.jpgKarrin Allyson Fan PageKarrin Allyson enthralls at Tuckerman MUSIC REVIEW By Peter Landsdowne TELEGRAM & GAZETTE REVIEWER WORCESTER Warmth. That’s what jazz singer Karrin Allyson said she felt emanating from a crowd of about 300 ardent fans at Tuckerman Hall Friday night as she made a triumphant return to the venue. The small hall was packed almost to capacity as Ms. Allyson and her trio (pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Ed Howard and drummer Mark Walker) worked their way through two solid sets of her unique vocal stylings. The concert was presented by WICN (90.5. FM), Worcester’s NPR affiliate and one of the first radio stations to play the singer’s recordings, which now number 13 albums, all on the California-based Concord Jazz label. Decked out in a flowing pink smock worn over tight black leather pants and sporting black leather open-toed pumps and her trademark pixie hairstyle, the lithe Ms. Allyson ranged from the blues to Brazil to Broadway and beyond in her two dynamic sets. She was particularly effective on Duke Ellington’s “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But the Blues,” belting out the line, “I ain’t got change of a nickel,” before moving into some melismatic swoops on the “I ain’t got nothin’ but the blues” hook. She was equally as effective on Ellington’s jaunty “Love You Madly” (Duke’s favorite expression to his fans) and especially on a beautifully rendered interpretation of Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady,” on which her stark vocal reflected the loneliness suggested by the song’s lyrics. Ms. Allyson turned to the Great American Songbook for “Say It (Over and Over Again),” a lush but seldom-heard ballad from the singer’s 2001 Concord Jazz album “Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane,” and a wistful “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows.” Elsewhere, she infused a Latin beat into “I’ve Got a Lot of Livin’ to Do” and a waltz in the song’s bridge before belting out the tune in a straight-ahead 4/4 groove. The singer was adept at interpreting lyrics set to instrumentals composed by jazz musicians. Tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints,” the title track from her 2006 album, was a case in point. Ms. Allyson easily negotiated the complex melody line as she sang lyrics about following a set of footprints to see where they lead. An added bonus: The singer commandeered the grand piano from Barth and contributed her own jazz piano solo to the mix. Similarly, the singer brought a soaring lyricism to jazz pianist Bill Evans’ “Turn Out the Stars,” which Ms. Allyson injected with a poignant tenderness through lyrics about turning out the stars and stopping the roar of the ocean in the absence of a loved one. Like “Turn Out the Stars,” the singer’s version of Paul Simon’s “April Come She Will” is on “Round Midnight,” her most recent album. Still accompanying herself on piano as Barth provided some filigrees and trills on electric piano, she sang with a folksy charm, showing the spellbound audience why the latest album garnered a Best Jazz Vocal Grammy nomination for the singer, her fourth such honor. Ms. Allyson was at her best on “O Pato” (“The Duck”), a sizzling samba about a waterfowl that learns how to dance. She sang the Portuguese lyrics with aplomb and even got some spot-on audience participation on the “quack-quack-quack” parts. The singer and her trio earned a hearty standing ovation for their efforts. Ms. Allyson sans band provided the encore, bassist Jay Leonhart’s quirky “Robert Frost.” She was alternately reflective and bluesy as she pondered how Robert Frost supported himself while writing poetry. The song’s lyrics postulate a supportive wife (“Bobby, don’t you worry about the mortgage”) who brings home the bacon AND cooks it before realizing that “everything in life stays the same.”
