Teacher Appreciation Week Continues!!! Here's a story from Ana Kelly. What teacher has made a difference in your life? "I was NEVER good at math except one year in the 6th grade, all because of one special person, Mr. Dwyer. He was a mathematics teacher at Sharples Middle School in the South end. It was the time of desegregation in Seattle and us Northender’ kids we were bused to South end to go to school. Mr. Dwyer made that awkward transition so much easier because he was positive, engaged, inspiring and taught us about accountability. So much so that every day we would go home with homework and he expected it back the next morning; He wouldn't take it home to grade it, he would grade it right away. We would get it back so we could work on it in class. He would help us with the problems we had the most trouble with. I felt like he really cared about me and that I GOT it! It was a big confidence booster. Math has never been my strong suit (that's one of the reasons why I got into broadcasting) but with Mr. Dwyer's passion for teaching....math became fun! In fact the top 5 kids who had the best homework records for the month would be treated to a Mariners game at the Kingdome. Guess who was top 5 that month?! Me! I still can't believe I was good at math…..well at least for a couple of semesters anyway. Who knows, if I had a Mr. Dwyer in EVERY math class I took in school maybe I could've been a Boeing Engineer. Hmmmmm. Thank you Mr. Dwyer! You will never be forgotten.....home run!"

Teacher Appreciation Week continues! Today Sarah Taylor shares her memory: "Freshly sharpened pencils and wooden desks with plastic chairs, I can still remember how Mrs McClannahans 2nd grade classroom smelled and looked with vibrant primary colors. She had a warm, inviting smile and a soft spoken nature. Empathetic and observant, she noticed my tears when it came to distinguishing the long sounds and short sounds of vowels, and kept me in for third recess for a few weeks to give me extra help. She could often be found at the sides of our desks, coaching us through our work, spurring us on because she knew what we were capable of. But what I remember most was the loving way in which she looked at each of us - sensing our potential and delighting in us individually." Who made the biggest impact on you during your school years?

It's Teacher Appreciation Week! The SPIRIT 1053 on air crew is sharing our favorite teachers all week long! Here is a story from Amy: "He made me feel smart. So, that makes him my favorite... teacher that is. Math wasn’t always my favorite subject. Frankly, I believe I started to get behind in Math around 7th grade and struggled through 10th grade math class. But my 11th grade teacher, Ira, changed the way I saw myself and I began to love math. For the first time, instead of trying to teach me the same as everyone else—I feel like I was being taught the way I learn. Here is Ira with his three daughters, Rachel and twins Erin and Emily." Do you have a story of appreciation to share about a favorite teacher? We want to hear it!

Remember when you were middle school age and you never felt like you fit in or that anyone noticed you? Back in 6th grade, that’s exactly how I felt. But I was fortunate enough to have Mrs. Smith for a teacher. She never treated teaching like it was “just a job.” She was truly interested in each student and delighted in each personality, no matter how socially awkward. Being creative herself, she nurtured that part of me and made me feel like I could actually be something more than invisible. No matter what I tried, she validated it and made me feel special and accepted. Even all these years later, I still remember her example and try to see people the way that she saw them. ~Donna, with Steve & Amy Morning Show
